Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is dynamic and diverse, with deep respect for our different cultures. We highlight and celebrate our varied backgrounds through lessons, activities and events that make all our learners feel special. Our students are thriving in this culture of respect; they are proud of their home countries and are eager to share their stories We are proud of our high degree of parent involvement in our cultural events and and celebrations. Our students are very curious and excited to learn.

As a the school Media Specialist, I try to ignite student curiosity about the world through stories, songs, and geography: we use our globe of the world everyday.

Our learners are aware and interested in the bigger world around them, and our teachers work hard to help students think outside our own lives, creating a global awareness of the world.

Our school is located in a Hispanic neighborhood near the center of Charlotte, NC. Our students come from a low income demographic, and we're a Title I school. Although life is not always easy, our families are strong and our students resilient.

My Project

I want my students to see and feel how books can come alive, and music is a great way to make that happen! As a Media Specialist, I'm always looking for ways to actively engage my students with books that will instill a lifetime love of reading. I strongly believe that finding the "right" book at the right time" for a student can ignite that excitement.

Friction Farm's "Stories and Songs" program takes popular books with a range of characters our students will see themselves in, and puts them to music.

In the library I use music as a way to introduce and build interest in stories, so my learners already know the power of that connection. I am excited for my students to hear loved stories put to music, as well as becoming introduced to new books!
