This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an early childhood special education classroom in a school district in a low-income neighborhood. Being a self-contained classroom, it is low in number but high in need for support. There can be up to four students enrolled in this classroom, each requiring adult assistance to get basic needs met.
Each child that enters my classroom are delayed in several domains.
Students that enter this classroom are often delayed in their verbal skills, self-help skills, physical skills, and cognitive skills. Children learn through basic sign language, songs, movement, visuals, and play.
My Project
In my previous funded project my classroom received several resources for students to process their emotions. Some of those resources included visuals about moods, feelings, and emotions, simple books about processing emotions, corrective books that give students replacement options for negative behaviors, and mirrors for students to see themselves processing emotions.
Our classroom received some wonderful resources, but now my students need a safe space to collect and utilize them.
This project consists of a reading nook and pillows with emotion faces on them. What is designed at a reading nook will be used for students to crash into if need be when they are upset. The nook is also small enough that the walls can be decorated around it with visual supports about emotions. The pillows will be another area for students to sit on with the added bonus of an extra visual for students to verbalize how they are feeling.
