First graders, or "firsties" as I so lovingly like to call them, are the most entertaining group of little people to be around. The growth that they demonstrate throughout the year, both academically and socially is amazing to watch. These students are the reason that I wake up with a smile on my face in the morning. Although they come with their own set of challenges, there is never a lack of love in their hearts. I love my firsties and I want to provide them with every opportunity possible.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting for my classroom library serve a very important purpose. First grade readers often begin their love (or reluctance) for reading during this very important year of their eduaction. No matter how hard we try as teachers to find books that are on their reading level and are interesting to the reader, it can be a daunting task. We require them to read boring and irrelevant texts when we do our very important guided reading time every day. The books I have selected are of high interest among. Most every first grader enjoys reading about the characters I have selected. They can choose from Pete the Cat, Corduroy and Danny and the Dinosaur to Leo the Late Bloomer. This is why having a classroom library for students is so important. Young readers begin to enjoy reading when they see the books as relevant to their lives. Enjoying reading is vital for young reader success. I guess you could say, it's not always such a bad thing to judge a book by its cover.
