Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high poverty, low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them live in low income apartments. One hundred percent of them qualify for government assistance and the federal free lunch program. Many of them are ELL learners and speak English as a Second Language. However, these barriers do not discourage their love for learning!
These students come to school every day excited and ready to improve their reading and writing.
Their parents are very concerned about their children's education to provide them a better life. Although they are disadvantaged in so many ways, you would never know it by their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn.
My Project
In an inner city school of almost 600 children, there are going to be lots of times when they become sick or ill. Those students need a place to lie down and rest before their parents arrive or even if their parents can arrive.
We are requesting comfortable, cushioned chairs for our students.
Like adults, sometimes a temperamental student just needs a break and a few minutes to get things back together.
These pieces of furniture will be used to fit those needs. Students can talk with the counselor, read a book, or just take a mental break from the stresses of the day. These children come from homes where they sleep on the floor and furniture is a luxury. A comfortable atmosphere in an alternative classroom takes the focus away from institutionalized settings and helps the child to feel in a more relaxed and home style environment that they may otherwise not be seeing.
Because of funding issues, our schools are not able to afford these luxuries. But a nice resting place can make all the difference in the world to a child who is sick, irritated, or just needing some comfort. I will use these items to help stressed and anxiety ridden students to relax with a stuffed animal and blanket during times in which they need comfort. They also can be used for special privileges and reading times. For many, a comfortable chair and blanket at school may be the only time they know it.
