My Students

We have a classroom full of students with different learning styles, and I need to be able to give each student the best chance at accessing her or his potential.

We are a Title I school with access to very few materials.

There is never enough of anything to go around my over-populated class. Textbooks are shared. Workbooks are not to be written in. And hands-on tools designed to be used in pairs are often shared among groups of 10 students at a time. Through a grant with the NYC Department of Education and a program called, Math Solutions, I have been spending two Saturdays a month participating in a wonderful class to teach educators how to better engage their students in the fascinating world of mathematics. Despite the need to rise early on a weekend morning, I look forward to attending this professional development program because it inspires me to do a better job teaching my students to think, discover, and internalize concepts in ways no textbook could motivate any student to do. The problem is, the program relies heavily on the use of hands-on tools that we do not have. I need the tools to put these proven teaching strategies to work.

My Project

With a full set of colorful, fun, and tactile Cuisenaire rods, I can teach number sense, place value, fractions, decimals, geometry, algebra, patterns, etc. And my students can explore, build, excite, share, and investigate mathematical concepts in a manner that feels closer to play than work, and is thus infinitely more interesting and inspiring to them. Your donation will help a class of smart, sweet, and funny fourth-graders become more engaged and excited about Math. You will directly affect their ability to master complex mathematical concepts. You will help them learn how to solve problems on their own, through investigations and discovery. And most importantly, you will make their little hearts sing, knowing that adults exist in this world who think that they are important and worthy little people.

Thank you for supporting education, teachers, and children.

And thank you, especially, for considering this project to help bring life to my lessons and learning to my students. We all sincerely appreciate it.
