Sometimes Life Forces Us to Calm Down

My students need a weighted lap blanket, sensory toys, pillows, and sand timers to use in a designated "cool down corner" when they are upset or overwhelmed and need some time to refocus.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We are a Title I K-5 school, with approximately 680 students. 83% of our students have been identified as economically disadvantaged, which qualifies every one of our students to receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of my students come to school with heavy burdens, fears, and trauma. These challenges often times interfere with their mind and ability to focus in the classroom.

It is my goal every year to ensure our learning environment is not only welcoming, but also a place my kids feel comforted and safe.

We work on developing positive character traits through growth mindset learning, watching inspirational videos and reading books, and making connections to their lives. We talk through struggles and celebrate every achievement. I strive to make sure my kids know they are loved and have the potential to do anything they put their minds to, even with the challenges they encounter throughout their lives.

My Project

Studies have shown that schools that have provided a designated "safe place" in each classroom has successfully decreased major disruptions and poor behavior. For many children, recognizing and managing unstable emotions in times of stress and conflict is a challenge.

My goal is to create a calming area in my classroom where my students feel comfortable to go to when they are feeling angry, stressed or sad, or when they want to be alone for a short period of time.

I have chosen sensory processing items like pillows and weighted lap pads that I believe will best assist my students in learning to self-regulate their emotions, instead of disrupting the class with negative behavior.
