This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a diverse working-class neighborhood, with a strong sense of community. We are the only Title I Middle School in our district, and all students receive free lunch and breakfast. For many, our library is their only resource to find books they love. Two-thirds of the students read two or more years below grade level, and we have many programs in place to improve their reading levels. Sometimes, though, you just want to read for pleasure.
My students love to read books in a series; the gorier the better!
The students, who have become hooked on these books, are disappointed when they discover our series is incomplete, because the books simply fell apart. Our budget is limited, so we just keep repairing the books we have as best we can.
My Project
They say you can't tell a book by its cover, but actually, it is sometimes really about the cover appeal! The books in this project have been read so many times that the covers are dated and torn, many held together with thick tape. This lack of visual appeal is a sure turnoff when it comes to making a book selection. The updated copies of these series will open the worlds of Redwall and Cirque Du Freak to even more of our students, when they look brand new. Students also love graphic novels and will hopefully transfer their interest from the graphic format to the novel, as well, in the Cirque Du Freak series. Included are a few additional titles to replace equally torn or damaged copies, in other series, as well.
An investment in this project will encourage my students to catch the reading bug and hopefully develop into lifelong readers and learners.
