Something to Draw Upon: Empowering Students Through Art

My students need new and sturdy tables that will provide a quality surface for them to complete their art lessons on.

This project expired on April 14, 2016.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine creating masterpieces on an uneven wobbly surface? My students try hard daily to create quality art, but it is hard to do that, when the table they are working on is fighting against them - moving back and forth with every elbow rest. Crayons and pencils roll off the uneven surface.

The school is Title I, and part of a district suffering major cutbacks and funding issues.

My students all come from low socioeconomic status households, and all receive free lunch at school. Due to the district's issues, I am not provided a budget for my classroom, and since last year, I have spent A LOT of my own money, and raised other donations as well, to help provide art materials and furniture for my classroom. All students, no matter what their background, or where they live, deserve an equitable chance at education and art education! It breaks my heart that my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage, to no fault of their own. These kids are bright, creative, and excited to learn more in the arts. No matter what struggles they face at home, they still wake up and come to school everyday! They are stronger than they know, and deserve so much more than they are handed. Empowering students through art is so important!

My Project

With the addition of the new tables to my room, my students will have a quality surface to work on. No longer will they be fighting against the wobble of an older table with uneven legs, or the warped surface from years of water damage. Now my students can have a solid and stable surface to create their art on, which will improve the quality and expression in all they do. 90 percent or more of their art is done on the table surface, so it is very important to have a quality table to work upon. Additionally, the different color tables will help to organize the class by table groups, so each group has a different color, and conveniently enough that will also work in tandem with teaching color theory as the tables are the primary and secondary colors. Furthermore, the octagon shape of the tables will help to assign seats, and allow for students to remain in their designated area without any confusion. Lastly, these tables will be a space saver as they are not as huge as my current tables.

Art brings beauty and wonder into their world, and allows more opportunity to build language and social skills.

Art shapes our world, culture, and identities, and my students' lives will be changed for the better, when they come to an art room that has the right equipment for them to work on to express themselves. My students will see and feel that they are important. My art room will improve by becoming a more updated and nurturing space, where I am empowering students through art.
