My students work in a team-taught atmosphere and spend a ton of time together. We study Shakespeare (with costumes and props - the way it was meant to be read), read a lot of books, and are working to become excellent writers.
The students in my classroom see themselves on a learning continuum that always has endless space for improvement.
We read and write in class every day and love to do those things in diverse places; we can often be seen traveling around the school building and outside. We'll look anywhere for inspiration!
My Project
My Novel Experiences class is designed to make readers out of students who don't identify as readers. The first week of class, we filled out interest inventories to figure out what kinds of things we might like to read about, and they included that all-important question: What is the last book you remember liking? Their answers ranged from Captain Underpants and Black Beauty to The Hate U Give and The Berenstain Bears.
From these interest inventories, we went browsing online to choose books that might work for the readers we'd like to become, from The False Prince to Flowers in the Gutter.
This class will spend significant time reading in class each day, and having books that are personalized to their interests will set them on a great path right away. I am excited for kids to be able to get their hands on these books that I am so sure will help them rediscover (or discover for the first time!) how wonderful reading can be!
