Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a low-income/high-poverty middle school in the heart of San Francisco. The majority of our student body is Latino who arrive bright and early every morning.

As an English teacher, I hear so many of their stories.

Homelessness, deportation, even murder have been in the narrative of their lives and yet they still manage to get up every morning and come to school. I admire them, they are my heroes and I always try to do my best for them because they deserve nothing less than that.

My Project

Students often ask me what my favorite opera is, and I always tell them -- Opera Winfrey. Ha! I'm kidding, they never ask me what my favorite opera is. Anyways, speaking of music I just read in Oprah's new book ("What Happened To You? written with Dr. Bruce Perry) about somatosensory regulation, which is a theory of how rhythmic activities open up the cortex and makes the reasoning part of the brain more accessible for learning. I'm sure many of you remember blaring your favorite music while working on your homework. I used to play "London Calling" by The Clash while I worked on Algebra, which may explain why I teach English. Here's the deal -- I was doing it wrong. The trick is to listen to instrumental music, which brings me to my project. Students often ask if they can listen to music when they write, and I tell them as long as it's instrumental and not played too loud. The problem is they don't have headphones. I have found these headphones which are fairly priced and can be cleaned off with disinfecting wipes (for Covid, or hair gel). As always thanks for even considering, donors. We'd be lost without you.
