Soldering to Study Speed

My students need soldering iron kits and LED Robot Blinker Kit to be involved in learning physics with a purpose.

My Students

Our students are eager to please and they want to enjoy learning. About 85-90% graduate in 4 years, and many students go on to attend selective public and private 4-year colleges. We are situated in a very rural area, which gives us a lot of opportunities to connect science to farm life as well as the other local industries.

Our students leave us with a strong foundation in academics.

However, it is a challenge to provide support for modern technologies that students in other districts may be exposed to. At least 1/3 of our population qualifies as low-income, and probably more since we are in an area hit badly by economic downturns.

My Project

Many of my Physics students aspire to enter STEM careers, but have not had a lot of prior engineering and electronics experiences. In prior years, students have eagerly embraced building wind tunnels and mousetrap cars in a class. Experienced students have enjoyed showing their skills to classmates; inexperienced students are thrilled to have used a power drill or soldering iron for the first time.

This project allows students to discover the world of electronics while providing them with an authentic study of motion and kinematics.

Students will work In teams to assemble a blinking robot toy, using the soldering kits. This will allow me to teach students how to solder as well as how electronic components work. The fun, blinking robots will be of high interest to students and provide affirmation of their new skill. Then, students will apply their new skill to build robotic line-following cars which we will use for our study of kinematics (speed and velocity).

This project will be a great way to encourage students to take ownership of their learning right from the beginning of the school year. I believe it will get students invested in their learning right away, setting the tone for a great year in Physics together!
