Students working together to solve challenges that "real engineers" face. My Exploring Computer Science classes look at the development of computer science from binary and logic gates to processor design, programming, databases, and game design. It's a taste of the different areas and careers available in Computer Science.
If you walk into my classroom, you will see a group of energetic students working together to solve engineering challenges.
It is a great chance for them to develop skills for their many future careers.
If you step out into the Robotics Lab, you will see a 12'x12' arena for First Robotics where teams of students are building a robots to enter the yearly competition.
Our students come from highly diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are fortunate to have over 40% of our class, and over 60% of the robotics club made up of girls. Olympia High School serves the east side of the state capitol.
My Project
We are developing a fabrication area/makerspace in my classroom. Electronics workstations are a big step to help the students complete their projects. Breadboards are great for testing, but to create true prototypes we need to solder.
This will require not only the soldering irons, but also the air filters, holding arms and tool sets to do the job correctly and professionally.
The projects we are currently working on include a light up shell prop for the Little Mermaid production at our school, a light setup that works with a referee whistle for students with hearing loss, dapting a power wheel, for a two year old to use as a wheelchair; add to that the four FIRST FTC robotics teams. This equipment will see regular use throughout the year.
