Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school where the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students speak Spanish, Polish, or another language other than English at home. It is a great, diverse place to work!
Students come to class eager to learn every day.
I believe giving time to have a soft start will make sure they continue to come to school excited and ready. Just think, as adults we want to ease into our day, so why do we expect different from our kids? This time in the morning will help build a classroom community, problem solve, and work cooperatively.
Students have developed a passion for reading, especially picture books. I cannot keep mentor texts on my bookshelf! They learn so much about reading and writing from them!
My Project
We started soft starts in our classroom this morning, a time where kids can come in and start their day on the right foot. This includes building with LEGOs, drawing, using Play-dog, etc. Some of their favorite things to do are to innovate with LEGOs and Magformers. Unfortunately, I don't have enough for them to continue to build, so I am hoping to get more of these materials.
Another love of my class, is picture books and mentor texts.
We use picture books to help us with our reading and writing, as well as with social emotional learning. I am hoping for a few more titles that we can use in our classroom this year to help us grow in all areas!
