Socially Distant...Yet, Still Together!

Help me give my students a memorable experience to share with their peers with personalized bags for each student.

My Students

My average day in the classroom begins when I welcome my eighth-grade students including regular students, students receiving special education services, and students with emotional needs. I want all of my students to succeed.

My students like to participate in the school drama club, which is why I sponsor this activity.

I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high-poverty school in an urban area that experiences crime. Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students come to school eager to learn, from various living situations such as single-parent homes, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living.

My students are the most eccentric, funny, and smart kids you would ever want to meet. Skill levels and overall levels of support vary by student. One thing that is universal is our desire to work together. On the first day of school, we identified ourselves as a family. We are a family that takes care of one another and looks out for one another; this is what we do. We work together to accomplish our goals.

My Project

As we enter the new calendar year, I want to continue to create bonds between my students. This February, I want to encourage all of my students to come together and exchange small tokens for the upcoming holiday. Each student will be equipped with a bag and will be able to share various items (glasses, bracelets, candy) with their classmates.

By creating something like this, every student will feel included and have the opportunity to share and bond with their classmates in a safe setting.

Everyone will feel included and this will help create a welcoming atmosphere and a strong feeling of wellness in our classroom. When everyone feels good and included, they can stop worrying about the "gossip" and continue focusing more on the learning happening in the classroom.

At the end of the day, every student will walk away with a bag of materials, labeled with their name, and hopefully, they will walk away with a few new friends as well!
