Socially And Emotionally And Communicationally Ready To Learn

Help me give my students hands-on, playable ways to explore emotions, speech patterns and social expectations.

My Students

My students are 5/6 years old. They were 3/4 years old when the pandemic started. These are primitive years for growth & understanding of the world around them, but with the pandemic, they did not get that exposure to the world. They have not been taught how to interact with their world. They have been told not to touch, not to get close & their voices have been muffled with masks & distracted adults. In these years of speech growth, my students were unable to view other peoples mouths to imitate placement & sound of words, so I am seeing a lag in communication.

Their view of emotions have always been masked, literally.

They confuse expressions or simply don't understand them. They were unable to attend typical hands-on preschool & therefore did not learn how to properly play with others. Because toys & manipulatives were sprayed, put away & limited, they have not learned how to be responsible & put things away. Because parks were fenced, they have not learned how to problem solve around a busy playground. Add this lack of social skills to the lagging communication, and you have frustrated children who aren't ready for academics.

My Project

The games and tools I have selected center around social emotional growth and clear understandings of communication and word patterns. I have also included several recordable tools to be used so that students can hear and record their own speech to see what they sound like to clarify their speech or so that they can hear appropriate clear speech to mimic.

There are several hands on, turn-taking games that center around emotions and social expectations.

Some of these games are in a format that can be sent home to families for my students who struggle the most with these skills, but we will begin with practicing them at school. The games have pieces and parts that students will learn to be responsible with and shown how to carefully put things away.

Other hands-on games center around speech patterns such as rhyming words, sight words and sentences.
