I'm Ms. Jackson a Special Education Teacher (Behavior Academic Support Environment) in Plano Texas. In all I have 15 students who are Autistic (high function) and (ED) Emotionally disturbance.
The students struggle with empathy for others or learning to accept difference. Through social skills my student are in the process of learning social cues, understanding body language. My student lack social skills they struggle to interact in groups.
At this time my students are working to build rapport and positive interaction among themselves through fun and learning.
My students will learn and develop skills that will help them to be a successful individual by learning to interact positively and effectively. Students will learn to have empathy for others and ensuring respect and understanding.
My students need these skills to be successful in life to be a mature and responsible student and adult. Students learn through the process of playing the game learning life skills.
By playing a game, students may be able to understand a new concept or idea, take on a different perspective, or experiment with different options or variables.
For example, Monopoly, known as the classic game of real estate and trade, is virtually a must-have for a social skills classroom. Monopoly is known for teaching students about math and finances. Monopoly is also an incredible and powerful way to teach life responsibilities. Chess is known as the king of board games, strategically planning. These games are life learning and relationship building.
In Their Own Words
"Socializing with other students and dealing with complex situations. For example; you want to win but you don't want to hurt other feelings."
-Royden H.
"Motivating each other, learning leaderships skills and teacher us how to show respect rather we win or loose. For example, Playing monopoly being the banker."
~E.R
It will help with team building and team work. It also helps with healthy competition and knowing what to do if you win or lose. The games choices are fun. I look forward to Friday's especially when I had a hard week and I get to play fun games with my peers.
-E.R
I feel as if having these games we will have something to look forward to at the end of the week. So we are working towards a treat. The challenges I think we may have is remaining respectful. Students may get angry or upset if they lose or frustrated with other students while playing the game.
