I currently teach an Early Childhood KIDS Autism special education program.
My students are 3-5-year olds and have been diagnosed with Autism.
My students are amazing young kiddos who share stereotypical behaviors that can be perceived as abnormal by typically developing people and students. As a special education teacher, it is my job and my passion to help my students overcome these behaviors, teach them how to function in a classroom, and ensure they are able to move to an inclusive (general education) kindergarten classroom when they turn 5 years old.
My Project
I moved to a Title I school this year, and we had no materials to begin the year. I have struggled to make activities and centers for our diverse learners. My students are high needs due to their disabilities and would learn and benefit from an environment and material-rich classroom. My students need hands-on materials that they can touch, feel, smell, and learn from.
Students with Autism have a hard time playing, socializing, and communicating with their peers.
Preschool builds a foundation for the later years in school. Preschool helps with social skills, communication, cognitive, gross motor, fine motor, etc. When students have the correct resources and materials to learn and grow from, they are more likely to be included in an inclusive general education program where they will be able to thrive with their typical peers.
Our students need games to help engage them in turn-taking, socializing, and making friends. Games, such as Candyland and Jenga, will help our students initiate interactions and encourage socializing with each other.
