My students are a diverse group of 5 and 6 year old's. They work hard and are responsible, respectful, and joyful in their learning. However, they are very "busy" and active, and frequently ask "When can we play?" They need opportunities for hands-on learning to increase engagement, build social skills, and learn how to problem-solve.
Having materials that are of high interest and at the same time promote communication and collaboration in a positive way will assist in channeling their energy as well as developing the social and emotional skills they need in order to be their very best selves!
My Project
As a kindergarten teacher of 27 years, I have seen a dramatic shift from developmental, hands-on learning to more academic curricula with stringent expectations.
An adverse by-product of this shift is a decrease in the ability of young learners to socialize, share, work cooperatively, and problem solve.
Poor social skills and increased behavioral issues are on the rise because young children simply are not afforded the time or resources to engage in social, hands-on play.
It is my strong belief that 5 and 6 years need more opportunities to develop their social and emotional skills, and the best way to do this is through engagement in a play-based environment.
My goal is to incorporate more hands-on learning in my classroom without sacrificing academic expectations or rigor.
