As a kindergarten teacher of 27 years, I have seen a dramatic shift from developmental, hands-on learning to more academic curricula with stringent expectations. An adverse by-product of this shift is a decrease in the ability of young learners to socialize, share, work cooperatively, and problem solve. Poor social skills and increased behavioral issues are on the rise because young children simply are not afforded the time or resources to engage in social, hands-on play. It is my strong belief that 5 and 6 years need more opportunities to develop their social and emotional skills, and the best way to do this is through engagement in a play-based environment. My goal is to incorporate more hands-on learning in my classroom without sacrificing academic expectations or rigor.
