Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, thoughtful, and inquisitive. They enjoy learning about the world around them and how they fit into it. In my social studies class, you can often find them discussing timeless ideas about history and how they're still relevant today.
These diverse 7th graders from Bushwick, Brooklyn bring their ideas, cultures, and struggles into the classroom on a daily basis.
They seek the opportunity to thrive, ask tough questions, and place an importance on wanting the world to be a more just and equitable place. Art, progressiveness, and poverty (still, sadly), are all living together in our beautiful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our community has always been very family-oriented, consisting of wonderful people and parents who want the best for their children.
While the neighborhood has shown economic growth over the past few years, our students are still missing much of what the average U.S. middle-schooler has. Unfortunately, they face many struggles growing up in the inner city. As a result, my students struggle with reading and writing. These kids have been through a lot and they are deserving of all the resources and opportunities that students from affluent school districts often take for granted.
My Project
Chromebooks will help my students become more engaged in their learning. During remote learning, they learned how to use wonderful tools such as Google Apps, Kami, Padlet, Peardeck, Nearpod, Docsteach, and many more in order to further their studies. Now, we need your help! The students don't have access to working Chromebooks in school. There aren't enough in the building for them to use. In my social studies class, students will use this technology not only to learn about history, but to communicate ideas, and enhance their digital literacy skills. It's dire that students receive this invaluable technology in order to increase college and career readiness.
My lessons integrate media, primary sources, reading, writing, and discussion.
Chromebooks will enable my students to better analyze a variety of primary sources the way they are intended to be studied. As of now, students receive black and white handouts due to a lack of supplies such as paper and colored printers/ink. Students will be more engaged when using programs that allow them to respond to each other in real time. Additionally, the tools that students use on Chromebooks will help to improve their literacy.
