Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn every day since my school adopted Project Based Learning. I introduce a driving question and my students determine their need to know as they delve into inquiry based learning. Over 70% of my students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program and about 60% are English Language Learners. They don't let these statistics hold them back. They know that their education is within their control.
Our current project, Social Justice Warriors, will allow my students to learn about the inspiring stories of social justice advocates within their community and beyond.
I always try to pair a novel with our project to which they can connect because access to good literature is limited to my students due to their economic status. Please consider donating so we can have a class set of books for our novel study to support our project.
My Project
These books will help my current and future students discover a love for learning, develop stronger literacy skills, and hear stories about people in need of having their voices lifted up. We will use literature circles to delve deep into the story to enhance student learning and brainstorm how they, as sixth grade students, could support real people in similar situations. This will also springboard students' brainstorming on other social justice issues for which they may want to advocate.
Help this new generation become inspired to be social justice warriors.
Your support is truly appreciated and will touch many students to come.
