Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a Title I urban district where 75% of the people are considered low income. The students are working hard against disadvantages they've had since birth. My students are primarily Latinx and African American. Most speak two languages.

These students are very curious about the world beyond and they are very passionate about current events and how they fit into the wider world.

They want to be active and informed citizens that work to make a difference in their community and world.

My Project

I am shifting my teaching practice to a focus on research skills for our 10th grade students. In this new unit, students will conduct research on various civil rights and equality movements that occurred in the middle and end of the twentieth century.

Students will examine equality movements of African Americans, Women, and LGBTQ rights and make connections to how those rights are upheld today.

These research materials will support students with a large amount of diverse texts to use to learn about these topics.

Students will learn how to evaluate the quality of sources while learning how to properly cite their sources and select compelling evidence. These materials will provide students an opportunity for new texts to read to deepen their understanding.
