This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students attend a small, autonomous, public, Title I high school where the student population is 93% youth of color and 75% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. Many of them experience living in health and wellness deserts; and since COVID, the well-being of some of my students has declined. Even though a majority of the students come from adverse backgrounds, they are bright and enthusiastic learners who are eager to learn how social gastronomy can improve their mood and well-being.

Breaking bread and connecting through food has always been a way for communities to gather and support each other through good times and bad.

I'm offering my students a way to cope through the power of preparing and eating food together. Social gastronomy is a fun and joyful way to bring my students together. It not only gives us opportunities to support each other during these tough times created by the pandemic, but we'll also be creating positive memories together sharing food.

We'll use the 20 lb. propane tank and the propane splitter hose to set up an outdoor camp-style kitchen in the school garden for cooking with my students. My students have requested breakfast for lunch so we'll make gluten-free pancakes with berries.

We'll use propane stoves that we already have to cook healthy meals, side dishes, and snacks. Recently we made Curry Chicken with sugar snap peas picked fresh from our garden along with basmati rice. The sparkling juice will be served with meals to make them more special.

At the end of the day, it is our connections to and support of each other as well as preparing and eating together that helps maintain good health and well-being. Thank you for considering giving to this very important project!
