Help me give my students supplies to work on our social and emotional skills. I am now able to reach out and help general education students who suffer from trauma.
I recently accepted a position as a Kindergarten - 3rd-grade Emotional Impairment and Behavioral Disorders teacher at an urban school district. My students all are on a free lunch program and come from low-income houses. I am starting up a new program and am a first-year teacher, which means that a lot of materials are needed. Students with emotional impairments have many sensory needs that require extra tools and specialized items such as exercise balls, fidgets, weighted blankets, and soundproof headphones. My current budget does not allow me the flexibility to purchase these tools in addition to basic school supplies.
I am asking for donations to help me create a safe classroom environment that my students can grow and thrive in, academically and emotionally.
My approaches to teaching include appropriate ways to calm down, how to handle feelings, and building social skills. This will be taught through yoga, flexible seating, and technology. We need to teach students how to relax, recharge and love themselves. I feel that using these extra materials, will prevent problematic behaviors from happening. This will allow for students to attend general education classes, and go on field trips.
My Project
I have recently started helping students who suffer from trauma and are currently in the general education setting. Many of our "bubble" students have behaviors and are not provided with many resources or tools to help.
With the help of my social worker, we are able to help teach students social and emotional skills that will set them up for success.
In order for us to do this, we need some extra supplies. I have found that many lovely donors are able to make this process a lot easier!
I have been blessed to be helped in the past, and love when people ask me how they can continue to help. I can't wait to help continue to show students how to be successful.
Students will be using situation cards to show real-life examples of how to handle problems. Students will also be using the people colors to draw themselves in situations. I plan on having students use scenario cards and emotions cards to identify and solve situations. It takes practice for students to become familiar with reading emotions, with these supplies we are able to do just this! Thank you!
