I teach some of the most amazing students. Many of them come from a low socioeconomic background but they still persevere every day.
This year we started the year remote but have just entered our hybrid model phase where they are finally back in the classroom.
Now that they are back it is so important to be focusing on their social-emotional well-being, as well as the academics that they will be learning.
My Project
This year my grade 5 team is using a new Social-Emotional Learning curriculum that pairs our activities with a new picture book every day. Many of my students are from low-income homes and don't have the best home environments. To ensure the learning of our students and meeting their social needs, all of these books will be read to the students every day with our new morning meeting curriculum. They range from emotions, friendships, growth mindsets, leadership, and much more. Having these books will not only allow students to learn more but to connect their own lives to these stories and have strong conversations with one another. UPDATE: Thanks to the support of a previous book request I have started this social emotional learning curriculum with my students. The students are asking and looking forward to the conversations that we have, that connect the curriculum with the picture book. Students have commented that they enjoy hearing the stories that help connect the topics to real situations that they are faced with every day!
