This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 3rd-grade students, most of which come from financially restricted households. With a school population that has 15% of students in temporary housing, 37% English Language Learners, and 40% having disabilities. I am determined to give my students the best learning experience possible.

My Project

Social and emotional learning, otherwise known as SEL, is the process in which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Now more than ever SEL is imperative in the school setting. Never before has this generation of learning been faced with such an overall heightened sense of anxiety. As we continue to face the effects of COVID-19, I want to help minimize the overwhelming feelings, emotions, and stress caused by this pandemic and other everyday triggers.

A calm down corner is a designated space in the classroom with the sole intent of being a safe space for my students to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional or physical control.

The chair, rug and books will be used in our calm down corner.
