I am a teacher of amazing students with specific learning disabilities in reading and math. Despite their struggles with learning my bunch of students strive to learn and grow. When one of my students was getting frustrated with a learning task, tears in her eyes, saying she couldn't do it, I looked at her and said, "Remember..." She quickly interjects, "I know I know, with practice I'll get it." My students do not give up because growth mindset is continually encouraged and affirmed.
My Project
My requests for materials are focused on two areas, Social Emotional Learning and math. In school today there is a great number of students who are affected by trauma and adverse childhood experiences. In addition, children's overuse of screens result in emotional problems and learning difficulties. There is a critical need for Social Emotional Learning. When students are dealing with these issues it can be extremely difficult to go to school and engage in a typical day of learning.
Social Emotional Learning resources can aid in addressing students' emotional needs along side their academic needs.
Social stories help kids to make sense of emotional and social situations. Social Emotional Learning lessons help the teacher strategically target needs. Simple things like a visual timer acts as an antecedent strategy that helps students with social emotional problems break down their work periods and manage break periods. By doing so, meltdowns and behavioral problems can be prevented.
Making sense of place value is a skill that many students with learning disabilities struggle with. They don't quite get it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and then when they are in 5th grade the curriculum moves very quickly beyond that foundational skill. Having a variety of hands on math tools for students is a good idea when trying to help them acquire math skills and then build fluency through practice.
