Social-emotional learning (SEL) plays a crucial role in the overall development and well-being of students. It focuses on cultivating self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These skills are essential for students to navigate the complexities of their academic and personal lives effectively.
By developing social-emotional competencies, students are better equipped to manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible choices.
This improves academic performance, as students are more focused, engaged, and motivated to learn. Additionally, SEL helps create a supportive and inclusive school environment, where students feel safe, connected, and valued.
I will use these materials in my classroom to help my students better understand their feelings. I teach in a very poverty-stricken area, which leads to a lot of trauma-induced behavior. A lot of my students experience death at an early age, drug and alcohol usage in the home, as well as being in the foster care system. With all of these factors being taken into consideration, a majority of my students have feelings that they do not understand.... yet. With your help, I hope to help them ease their anxiety, anger, and sadness, help them cope with the loss of a loved one, and understand grief, teach them the meaning of kindness, responsibility, patience, and much more. They will also have access to new fidgets to keep their mind at ease.
