Help me give my students the flexibility to learn in their most comfortable and flexible environment! I want to create a calming corner, flexible seating, and be able to block out the sun from big windows during class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I work in a Title I school and a lot of my students have never had the opportunity to engage in social-emotional learning. The front of my classroom has a perfect place for a calming corner and I believe investing in social-emotional learning will be highly beneficial for their current and future success. I value mental health wellness and it starts when children are young so they can develop the necessary skills to be emotionally intelligent as an adult.
My husband works with adults who are working toward living a clean and sober lifestyle and he constantly talks about how social-emotional learning, mental health checks, and wellness activities are critical when children are young.
Children who do not learn and consistently practice these skills can fall victim to a variety of behavioral issues, which can affect their academic outcomes. When I think of equity, I think of giving every child the same entry point in education, and this is the place where I want to give them the best chance at being emotionally intelligent and having healthy relationships with others. It all begins with having a place to work through big emotions, creating a free space to engage in sensory play, and resources to practice our skills to be the best we can be!
