My students entered our classroom with diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, skills, strengths, and challenges. Many of my students have moved to the United States from various countries just before the start of the school year. Some even arrived weeks into the school year from other countries. They have very limited schooling in their own languages and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
I work in a large Title I school in Brooklyn, New York.

My Project
With their stunning illustrations and deep lessons about emotions, the books chosen are meant to support social-emotional growth. Children love read aloud time, and I want to make it my mission to ensure that the students in my class not only gain a love for learning, but a love for one another and for themselves.
The books chosen will support social-emotional learning because some promote kindness, while some teach strategies to cope with certain emotions, and others promote diversity and inclusion.
The teepee will be placed in the "cozy corner," inspired by the NEST program, in which students have a place that they can go to in order to self-regulate with the help of these books along with other strategies. We truly appreciate your support!
