Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 3rd and 4th graders in a Social Communication Support classroom. The students in my classroom have sensory processing disorders and autism. Students often struggle with processing different environmental factors in the classroom which impact student learning.

The primary focus of our classroom is communication.

The students in the classroom often communicate with each other utilizing pictures to express their wants or needs. In our classroom, we use a hands-on approach as we cook weekly, create art projects, utilize frequent movement breaks, and incorporate items that make every aspect of academics a hands-on experience.

Each student in my classroom has an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) which provides them with a unique educational experience. Students participate in breakfast and snack in our classroom. During these times, we learn how to set a table, use manners, and further our focus on communication!

My Project

One of the focuses this year is teaching my students the different emotions and being able to express themselves. The world is very different from what they have always known and combined with their hurdles with communication it is extra difficult for students to express themselves.

Please help me give them a variety of books to learn social emotional learning, hands-on crafts to show what they have learned and express their feelings, and extra materials through a website called teachers pay teachers for social emotional learning activities.

Most of the books I have selected are books with a dragon character. I would like for my students to learn various emotions with this character and then create dragons that will demonstrate what they have learned. My students are from a title I school and many are unable to supply their students with the engaging materials.
