I work with students in grades 9-12 who have a variety of learning disabilities. When we are in class, I have the ability to use a variety of hands-on techniques to help students make sense of the material we are learning. We work on a variety of life skills and academics in class and now, students are working on those at home through a virtual platform.
My students are missing connections with staff and other students.
They are having a difficult time understanding why we are not in school and they are not quite sure how to express themselves during this time. The emotional health of my students is at risk. With this project, I am hoping to provide them with activities to support their social-emotional learning so they can be successful distance learners.
My Project
Many of my students are really struggling with the disruption of their daily routine because of this pandemic. My students rely on socialization with each other and hands-on learning activities. The lack of routine and consistency is causing high levels of stress in my students and they are having difficulty with the appropriate expression of their feelings.
The materials donated through this project will help my students cope with their stress and anxiety while they navigate this new way of learning.
Students can utilize techniques that we practice in the classroom to color, use sensory items, read a book or even have a light snack to maintain their balance. By helping my students meet their emotional needs, I can help them be better and more focused distance learners.
