Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every morning, we begin our day together with a read-aloud during our morning meeting. These stories help create a calm, welcoming environment where my students can connect, reflect, and prepare for the day ahead. I'm hoping to build a social-emotional classroom library filled with books that help students understand their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop important life skills. This collection will include books about managing feelings, showing kindness, caring for our classroom, solving conflicts, and being a responsible member of our school community. There are also a few book sets that focus specifically on taking care of classroom materials and recognizing and expressing emotions in healthy ways.

The lessons students carry in their hearts often last longer than the ones they memorize.

Reading allows children to step into someone else's shoes, see different perspectives, and better understand both themselves and the people around them. Social-emotional learning is just as important as academic learning because it helps students build empathy, confidence, self-control, and problem-solving skills that they will use far beyond the classroom. By expanding our classroom library with meaningful social-emotional books, my students will have daily opportunities to grow not only as readers, but also as kind, compassionate, and thoughtful individuals.
