Our students with special needs are fully included in the general education classroom throughout their entire school day. As a Head Start program, we have many children from diverse backgrounds and most coming from low income homes.
Our goal this year is for students to learn about kindness, respect, their own emotions, and what they can do to help themselves and others.
All our families are different, and we want to focus on learning about all the different ways we play, share and use language to encourage kindness and conversation. Every young student has a varying range of social-emotional needs, we are going to learn to express our feelings whether, sad, happy, mad or excited with great materials.
My Project
This year we have a high amount of children coming from homes where grandparents are the main caretakers, homelessness, families dealing with mental illness and single parents. Our Head Start program not only supports low income families, but also over 25% of our students have IEPs and are receiving support from a special education teacher to work their area's of need in the general education classroom.
We would like to use these materials to support a cohesive curriculum that focuses on social-emotional health and happiness in the classroom and at home.
We want to support children and families in any way we can. This year we would like to be fully prepared for the usually large amount of students with social-emotional needs. The books we are requesting will be used in small and large groups, they will lead open ended discussions that will lead into role play sometimes. We want kids to focus on expressing their feelings and encouraging them to make their voice heard. The sensory materials will be used for our students with ADHD & Autism, the fidget toys help with focus and attention and the weighted blankets help calm the kids during nap time.
