Social and Emotional Needs Met, Their Way

My Students

This year I will be working with several students to help assist with their social and emotional learning. I work in a very diverse school and all of our students' needs are different. We would like to help our students become independent and have a safe space to express their emotions in a healthy way.

The students in our building often just lack a safe space and the ability to learn how to deal with their emotions.

I am hoping with this grant we are able to get the tools we need to help students become more aware of their emotions. To help them work through those emotions in social situations. Then be able to apply what they are learning in those hard situations on their own.

I work with some of the most amazing students! Every day they teach me about love, kindness, and the ability to make the best out of every day. These children have blessed my life way more than I could have ever dreamed. Thankful to give them just a little bit of what they give me every day!

My Project

Often times giving students strategies to work through problems can be seen as dreadful for students. By having these tools I am able to incorporate life lessons through fun interactive games like Uno, Jenga, Connect 4 and Trouble, etc. I am able to transform games that students are some what familiar with and make them into lesson that teach skills like, self-worth, understanding and acceptance of other cultures, and self-confidence. All of which we have seen a drastic dip in with students since the pandemic. I am able to teach them that being vulnerable is brave. Help children develop stronger connections with others, support young people to build literacy skills and invite students to join in the conversation in a way that is developmentally appropriate and FUN. The fidget sets allow me to give students small things that they can manipulate and help with coping strategies in the classroom, such things as anxiety, sensory overload, focus attention. Giving students hands-on opportunities in a safe place helps students better understand and work hard on skills that otherwise may be embarrassing to them in other environments and situations. The books I choose give them a better selection of books that represent them and their cultures. Representation matters! It also helps students to understand other cultures. The affirmation tokens will be used as positive reinforcement to students of self worth and self confidence in who they are.
