Social and Emotional Books While Social Distancing!
Help me give my students access to Social and Emotional learning supports during this difficult time of social distancing and remote learning through engaging read alouds.
My school is a large Title-I school with roughly 700 Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Approximately 66% of our students are living in poverty and there are 17 different languages spoken at home. We take great pride in the cultural diversity we represent and are consistently inspired by the resiliency of our students. While many of our students do not have the advantages of having attended preschool, they enter the doors every morning eager for new discoveries and new challenges. We want to continue to encourage these learners every step of the way with as many experiences and opportunities as possible.
Although these gifts you are sharing with us may seem small, they will bring great joy to our students, and will have a profound impact on their academic achievement.
I am a 5th grade teacher. This year I have an active and creative group of 5th grade students. They come from a diverse background and my classroom is a mix of different cultures, religions, languages, families, and socio economic statuses. I am very excited about the opportunity to give them the ability to print their writing projects in the classroom.
My Project
Currently I am teaching from the basement in my home and missing my students immensely! Since schools have closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, I have been working hard to stay connected with my students and families.
During this time of school closures, I would like to read aloud to my students during our virtual class meetings from books that will support their social and emotional learning during this stressful time in history.
A document camera to use at home and fun, colorful books to read aloud would help deepen those connections with my students. These tools are also ones that I will be able to use for years to come once schools are reopened!
