My Students

I coach boys and girls inclusion soccer team from grades kindergarten through 5th grade after school at our school in Harlem. The children I coach show how multicultural soccer players come together for the passion of learning the sport that has brought them into one big family.

The children are so eager to come to practice during the day I see them and they tell me they are ready for practice, when is the game and who are we playing next?

During practice the children listen and give it their fullest. When we practice and go to games people show support. Most children came into the team not knowing how to kick a ball and now they are scoring goals.

The girl's soccer team won first place in the America Scores New York Jamboree 2018 Championship and I was awarded most improved coach of 2018. One of the girls from our soccer team received an award for best attendance for practice and soccer games. Overall the kids I coach due to soccer being part of the school community I have seen overall school attendance increase.

My Project

All of the children want to learn how to play soccer. The goals will be used for outside in the schoolyard and inside when it rains for all students. The bounce back net will be used for children to pass and throw the ball to it as a target. The hurdles and ladder will be used to maneuver around with and without a ball. SKLZ Star-Kick Hands Free Solo Soccer Trainer will be used for ball control. The parachute will be to top up the speed with and without a ball. All of the equipment will make our soccer team training more engaging and give students something that they have not experienced in their life. Most students in the soccer team have participated in the school's soccer team, not a travel team outside. I have seen other other programs have this equipment. Our children ask me “Why don't we have that?” Children in the soccer team come from low-income communities and hope soccer can be a positive motivation in their life to pursue. As soccer is growing in NYC we see students interested more in the sport. This is a new season for the soccer team to have full of new experiences. Every child must be given equal opportunities to play soccer, no matter where they come from and where they live. As a soccer player growing up, I received soccer scholarships to play in teams and for equipment because my family couldn't afford it. I want to give back by sharing my knowledge and skills that I have learned with every child. Soccer is for all.
