Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
High Tech High students are a diverse group of children from all over the San Diego community. They are passionate about earth and space science projects within our Astronomy Club. The goal of our work is to do stewardship, exploration and science.
Students in my class apply to High Tech High and are accepted based on a zip code based lottery. The school is designated Title I, and we are always seeking support for cutting edge projects. The drone donation will allow us to begin expanding beyond astronomy and land based projects and move into sea based exploration.
Students will use this drone to survey ocean wildlife near the San Diego coast. They will learn about the coastal ecosystem while leveraging technology to see the unseen. Students will work in teams to develop questions about the ocean ecosystem that they will attempt to answer with data gathered from footage taken above and under water. This work will be exhibited to the community for feedback.
In Their Own Words
The main purposes of our project are to find and research ocean life with a drone as well as to get aerial shots of San Diego to better understand the terrain and topographic traits of our city. With this project, we will be able to demonstrate knowledge in topography and oceanography, creativity, and leadership.
Using the DJI Magic Plus Drone, HTH Astronomy club will film the San Diego coast to capture footage of aquatic wildlife. These shots will be used for future astronomy club films and to learn about the ocean and sea creatures. In addition to that, the drone will also be used for our upcoming school project called "A Field Guide to San Diego", which is about studying San Diego’s nature and geography. We will use the drone to get aerial shots of San Diego, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the landscape, and the geographic traits and landmarks in our area.
We can also demonstrate leadership in this project, because we can take initiative to fly the drone and get shots that they might desire for their research or films, or anything else we may need it for.
This endeavor will truly be a valuable learning experience for all of us. Being able to get such footage with a drone would be a novelty and a learning resource for us all. We would be extremely grateful if you choose to help us along our way in this innovative and exciting new project.
