Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My hearing impaired students are ready and willing to participate in the music classroom. Let's help them participate in a way that will not only allow them to play an instrument, but also expose them to a new musical experience they've never had before!
I have worked at my school for the past year and have not had my hearing impaired students in my class.
I finally convinced one of our hearing impaired unit teachers to allow her students to come to my classroom and experience music once a week like the rest of the school does. The first day I let them play all the instruments that vibrated, so they could feel it since they can't hear it. The last instrument we tried was my ukulele. I found that they loved it because they could hold it, strum it, and FEEL the music. With them, it's all about tactile sensations. These students never get to experience music like this and they need to! I was overwhelmed by the joy and happiness they showed me from being able to be in music and now I am ready to expand upon that so they can go further and participate in our end of the year concert as their own special performing group. I think this would be a fantastic change for our school and I would love for my students to be a part of it!
My Project
The students will be taught how to play the ukuleles and will be able to participate in our end of the year concert, as well as future performances next year. This is a self-contained hearing impaired classroom, and currently do not get to participate in these types of events, so it would be a spectacular accomplishment to have them perform this year.
I am very excited about this project because I think it will bring a change to our school that is long overdue.
I know these kids are capable of being fabulous musicians even though they cannot hear. They can feel the music and need to be able to experience music class. Having these instruments would allow them to participate in music class and learn how to transfer music to something tactile.
