My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and attend a school with over 70% free and reduced lunch. We are very blessed to have access to common elementary school instruments, but many of my students do not listen to music from a classical upbringing. They have expressed interest in learning how to play guitar and ukulele because these instruments have been introduced to them in their homes, and they are familiar with them. If you want to be an effective teacher, especially with 700 students who HAVE to be in your classroom every week, you have to be willing to work with the children and their backgrounds. My kids would love to have exposure to more popular forms of music and with ukuleles we can learn how to read music, play the ukulele, and perform popular music for their parents. This will hopefully inspire students to continue in music after elementary school.
