This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Who knew the Virginia Reader's Choice selections for the 2013-2014 school year would be so appealing to our students? The 60 books we have were checked out in the first few days of school and we currently have over 50 holds on the titles! We need additional copies to meet the demand.
Our student population has grown by nearly 15% this year and it appears they are all readers...a great situation for us!
More than 84% of our student population receives free or reduced price lunch. The students come from low to middle income households headed predominantly by single-parents. The military is a strong presence and many students have parents who are deployed during the school year. Most of these students have little to no access to reading materials outside of school; it is up to us to provide for them.
My Project
The Virginia Reader's Choice program provides varied selections that enrich and expand student experiences through reading. This year the selections have a broad appeal to both boys and girls. It is unusual for us to have so many young men requesting holds on these books. Students are challenged to read at least 4 of the 10 selections during the school year and then to vote on their favorite book in April. The books in this project will help us reach an additional 300 students throughout the year.
Students and teachers alike are clamoring for additional copies of these selections; especially the book Wonder!
Help us continue to give our students choice in the books they read for the Virginia Reader's Choice program. Your support is much appreciated!
