So Many Environmental Variables That Affect Photosynthesis

My Students

I am very fortunate to teach the students of this community. They are motivated, inquisitive and really enjoy collaborating when given a project. Over the past year, parents have generously donated towards my vision of introducing STEM based chemistry and biology labs involving amazing technology that is used to gather data.

The students appreciate the opportunity to use the STEM lab equipment because it allows them to use technology while collaborating and using critical thinking to produce results which help prepare them for the future.

My Project

The oxygen sensors will be used to gather data related to the amount of oxygen gas consumed using various environmental variables. Photosynthesis uses oxygen as a reactant and with the use of oxygen sensors, the students will place parts of plants into a specialized 500 mL chamber and tightly connect the sensors by inserting them through a hole that has rubber fitting so no gas can escape.

With the use of STEM equipment, my students can gather reliable data using different environmental conditions.

They will be able to analyze the affect on the rate of photosynthesis with relation to temperature change, light intensity, pH of solutions which represents acid rain, and bicarbonate concentration.

This lab is very relevant because it is important for the students to understand that changing environmental conditions, such as global warming, acid rain, and pollution can have a serious affect on the rate of photosynthesis.
