This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class consists of 19 students who live in an urban setting. Our school has a 98% poverty rate. The ethnicity of my current students is mainly African American, with a few Hispanic and mixed race students. There are 5 students who receive special education services. Several are diagnosed with ADHD. Many of my students also have emotional needs.
For many of my students, school is their safe zone.
The students come to school knowing that they will be loved, cared for and given 2 meals a day. Some of our day is spent dealing with the emotional needs of students. Students know that school is a safe place for them to talk to trusted adults out their troubles and worries.
My Project
My students need to develop a love of reading. Reading can become a comfortable, fun activity with access to books organized in leveled book bins and bags. The colored bins help the students know what bins are their level. The bags will help students keep their book choices organized.
With the bins and storage bags, my students will have an easier time choosing books that will give them the opportunity to choose books at their level and books that interest them.
Students will be able to find books quickly and in an organized fashion. Organization is a life skill and the bins and bags will help to promote organization skills in my students.
