This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Located in Metro Atlanta and in one of the lowest economic neighborhoods, I have the honor of serving both young ladies and young men who attend single-gender academies in grades 6-12. We are a Title I school, so over 98% of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch, which is reflective of the urban setting and the community that the school resides within.
Our students do the best they can with the limited resources available to them and I personally see the struggle many of them face daily.
Our school is a second home and our teachers and staff are extended family members to numerous students. We do whatever we need to do to assist our students and families in an effort to show love and a commitment to the community.
My Project
“Mrs. Farrar, do you have any deodorant I can have?” “Mrs. Farrar, can I have some of your lotion?" These are just some of the questions that the students, the nurse, and teachers ask me almost daily. The students I serve as a school social worker should not have to ask for these basic items; however, given their individual situations (homelessness, lack of resources at home, etc.) they, unfortunately, do have to ask.
It can be hard for a student to express such a personal need!
My goal is to always show students respect and ensure that their need is met confidentially.
