Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember sitting in a wood or metal chair in your classroom all day? Definitely not the most comfortable option for most students! Many children love to read sitting on the floor. They are able to move and position themselves in a way that they are comfortable and focus on their book or text.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
They attend the largest elementary school in Staten Island, so money for resources is stretched thin. This year I will have the pleasure of teaching 60 fifth grade children in reading, writing, and social studies. My students range in ability levels from far below grade level to exceeding grade level standards. It is my responsibility to motivate my students every way I can !
The systems in place for our curriculum and learning environments invites students to read in the meeting area or library in the classroom. Often students find comfort in being able to leave their desk to go to a reading spot. It helps them to stay on task. Some students prefer to sit on the carpet to learn or in a small group because it feels more intimate and less stressful.
My Project
I would love for my students to have a rug to read on! Kids love to read on the floor in a comfortable spot. For some children allowing them to read on the floor is enough motivation to get them to read at all! They have a choice. Giving students a choice about where they can read motivates them and gives them ownership of their work. I am also trying to get a new book rack for my students. Book choice is another choice given to students. I encourage my students to choose books on topics that they are interested in and things that they would like to learn more about. With the new demands of the common core standards it is so important for students to be able to do this quickly, but still with purpose. The book cart comes with small book bins. This will allow me to separate and categorize my books into very specific topics so that my students will be able to find what they are looking for quickly and put more emphasis on the reading and work they need to do.
The demands on our students are getting higher and more difficult, yet the budget for education does not back this!
Please consider helping me give my students every opportunity to succeed. I want them to feel like their classroom is their second home. I want them to have the tools and systems in place to help maximize learning. Thank you in advance for taking an interest in my students and their success!!
