My students come from low income homes. Our school receives Title 1 funding, which means that more than half of our students qualify for free lunch services. Our school has over 1,200 students and our classrooms are not large enough to have a desk and rug space for all 32 students in my class. These children enjoy coming to school because it is a constant for them. As a teacher, I do everything in my power to make my students feel comfortable within their learning environment. When the students feel comfortable, they are more receptive to what they are learning. Another benefit is that children are able to relax and feel safe. When children know that they are safe in their school, it is easier for them to be honest and open about anything that is upsetting them and keeping them from being focused and learning to their fullest potential.
