Help me give my students the opportunity to experience the joy of reading while also learning English as they listen to the Read Along books on CD players at home.
I teach first grade at a Title I school with students from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. While only 6-years-old, they genuinely care about and are eager to help one another. They show their growth mindset through their "I just can't do this YET" attitude and celebrate the progress they make along the way.
In my class of 25 students, 16 of them speak another language at home.
We celebrate the language diversity in our class, and the kids frequently ask one another, "How do you say..." While we honor their home languages and their cultural diversity, they are all willing and eager to learn to read in English. In fact, they work very hard to do just that. Their persistence and determination are impressive, and the growth they have made is remarkable.
My Project
In my class of 25 students, 16 of them speak another language at home. Several do not have an adult at home that can read with them in English. Since learning to read is the crux of what we teach in first grade, these students are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning to read in English.
I would like to offer books on CD along with portable CD players for students to take home, so that they can listen to stories in English while holding the book in their hands.
Ideally I would have enough for them to take home a different book each week. So, I hope to eventually have 30 titles and 4-5 portable CD players, along with padded bags for the kids to transport the book and device.
