In my class of 25 students, 16 of them speak another language at home. Several do not have an adult at home that can read with them in English. Since learning to read is the crux of what we teach in first grade, these students are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning to read in English. I would like to offer books on CD along with portable CD players for students to take home, so that they can listen to stories in English while holding the book in their hands. Ideally I would have enough for them to take home a different book each week. So, I hope to eventually have 30 titles and 4-5 portable CD players, along with padded bags for the kids to transport the book and device.
