Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in the valley of Arizona, we don't usually get much fluctuation in our weather patterns. Winters get "cold", but our cold is not the same as many other places in the world, and we don't get snow! In order to experience snow, to play in it, to make snow angels, and much more, my students' families would have to travel quite a distance, and that isn't likely to happen for a good portion of my student population!
I teach at a Title I school, where everyone receives free breakfast, and over 75% of our students receive free lunch.
My students love to write stories and are extremely creative! I would like to have a winter themed writing assignment where my students listen to some read alouds about snow and blizzards, and then write a story about them being trapped in a snow globe! My students will use the details from the books and prior knowledge, if they have it, about a snow storm and being in the snow globe!
My Project
Many of my students do not have the opportunity to experience traveling and visiting places other than their neighborhoods and community. Many of my students have never been to a place where it snows, or had the experience of the chill of the cold snow against their skin as they play in it! The literature that I have chosen, along with others that I have in my classroom, will help students to gather information.
Once my students gather information from the literature, my students will then utilized the information to write imaginative narratives!
As a connecting activity, my students will also create an art project of them in a snow globe! This reading and writing activity will be exciting for my students! I would appreciate your help in funding this project, and helping my students to explore their imaginations to write great essays and art!
