Next year, I will be moving to Kindergarten. Yay! I'm excited to provide the foundational skills for our students. I am not exactly sure how many students I will have next school year. It should be somewhere between 15-20 students. The majority of the students at our school are English Language Learners. Many of these students face financial distress as well as other unimaginable obstacles. Over 80% of the students qualify for ESOL services and free lunch. Many of my students will speak little to no English. My goal is to make learning effective, yet enjoyable for them, especially since this will be the first experience many of them will have with structured learning and school.
As most of my students are English Language Learners, they often struggle with learning and remembering basic sight words. Sight words comprise many beginning texts. Sight words are words that students frequently see in books (i.e. the, a, and) or are irregularly spelled (i.e. said, what, one). It is important for students to be able to recognize these words quickly without having to stop and decode.
SnapWords are cards with images built into the word, accompanying actions, sentences, and stories to help with recall.
So, not only do the cards provide a visual clue and hand motion for the words, there are lessons to help me teach!
I am confident that this resource will provide students with snapshots, small pieces, to create a bigger picture, becoming better readers.
